What is Cannabis?
Cannabis is a plant that belongs to the Cannabaceae family and is known for its medicinal, recreational, and industrial uses. It contains hundreds of compounds, but the two most well-known are:
- THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): The psychoactive compound that causes a “high.”
- CBD (Cannabidiol): A non-psychoactive compound known for its potential health benefits.
Types of Cannabis Plants
There are three main species of the cannabis plant:

3. Cannabis Ruderalis 🌾
- Lower in THC and CBD compared to Sativa and Indica.
- Used mainly for crossbreeding to create autoflowering strains
Forms of Cannabis
Cannabis can be consumed in many ways, including:
- Dried flower (for smoking or vaping)
- Oils & tinctures (for oral or sublingual use)
- Edibles (gummies, chocolates, baked goods)
- Concentrates (wax, shatter, hash)
- Topicals (creams, lotions, balms)
Uses of Cannabis
1. Medicinal Uses
Cannabis is used to treat conditions such as:
✅ Chronic pain (arthritis, migraines, nerve pain)
✅ Anxiety & stress relief
✅ Epilepsy (CBD-based Epidiolex is FDA-approved)
✅ Insomnia & sleep disorders
✅ Nausea & appetite loss (especially in cancer patients)
✅ Inflammation (autoimmune diseases, Crohn’s disease)
2. Recreational Use
- People use cannabis for relaxation, creativity, or social enjoyment.
- Recreational use is legal in some countries and states.
3. Industrial Use (Hemp)
Hemp (a type of low-THC cannabis) is used for:
- Textiles & clothing
- Paper & biodegradable plastics
- Food products (hemp seeds, hemp protein)
Legal Status of Cannabis
- Some countries have fully legalized cannabis for medical & recreational use (e.g., Canada, Uruguay, some U.S. states).
- Others only allow medical cannabis (e.g., South Africa, Germany).
- Some countries still have strict cannabis laws (e.g., many Asian and Middle Eastern countries).
